Deepen your moments

“Let our scars fall in love.” - Galway Kinnell

Sometimes it is in the most unlikely places in our lives where we can find peace, joy, happiness or loving feelings. I often practice what I like to call “the deepening” of my life exercise. This is a mindfulness practice that I came up with in order to help me cultivate and nurture all of the feelings that I want to feel. Here is how I do it.

I look into my current moment and I rest my awareness on something simple like the soft plush feeling of my carpet between my toes or perhaps the comfort of my home or the health of my body. I just focus on anything that comes to mind that I can start appreciating. Then I milk it and follow my own thought energy with statements of appreciation. I go as deep as I can! Here is how it works in action. I do this in my head for 5-10 mins. Try it out and see who you feel.

Deepening exercise:

I cracked my phone case today. I was shocked because I have never cracked a phone case before. So I took off the phone case and I had forgotten how wonderfully sleek and smooth my iPhone is when it has no cover. The soft smooth feelings make me want to touch my phone more. The weight and bulk of my phone now feels about half what it was this morning but I like holding it more now that I can feel the glass on the front and the metal on the back of the device. Just look at what I get to have, my phone is such a nice tool for me. How fortunate I feel when I have my phone and my technology.

There was a time when I dreamed of having a portable phone. When I was eight years old I found a strange briefcase that someone had thrown away. When I pulled it from the garage and opened it up, I was pleased to find a briefcase cellular phone! Back in the late seventies this was high tech presidential tech, nobody had cell phones yet except maybe a very few select people! The phone didn’t work but I played with it and dreamed of having my own portable phone someday. Today my phone fits in my pocket! That briefcase phone took up all the space in the briefcase. I feel deeply satisfied to get to have the world that I do.

I am truly grateful for my journey. I am thankful for every single step that I have made. I am thankful for what each day has brought to me and for where I am. I love that I get to choose to be the champion of my life. I love that I am the hero of my movie. I love that all of the answers I will ever ask for are buried within me. I love that I am the solution to every single problem that I have. And I love that I can see just how important every single person, place, thing and experience really is.

I am love. I am joy. I am so very good.
