“Natural light the key to a happy body and mind”

"The sun is nature's own antidepressant, providing us with vitamin D and serotonin to elevate our mood and support our health." - Dr. Michael Holick

As a nutrition coach, I know how important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes both proper nutrition and regular physical activity. But what many people don’t realize is that natural sunlight is just as crucial to our overall health as a healthy diet and exercise.

Not only does sunlight help our bodies produce vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones and a healthy immune system, it can also help improve our mood and regulate our sleep patterns. Research has even shown that regular exposure to natural sunlight can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, osteoporosis, and certain cancers.

So, how much sunlight should we be getting? The answer varies depending on factors such as skin type and geographic location, but generally speaking, experts recommend spending at least 15-30 minutes in the sun each day, preferably in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense. It’s important to be mindful of skin protection and avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak hours when the sun is strongest.

But what if you live in a place with limited sunlight or are unable to spend time outdoors due to work or other obligations? Don’t worry – there are still ways to ensure you’re getting enough natural sunlight. One option is to invest in a light therapy lamp, which simulates natural sunlight and can provide similar benefits. Additionally, incorporating more vitamin D-rich foods into your diet, such as fatty fish and fortified dairy products, can help support your body’s needs.

Incorporating natural sunlight into your daily routine can have a significant impact on your overall health and wellbeing. So, next time you have the opportunity to soak up some rays, don’t hesitate to step outside and bask in the warmth and glow of the sun. Your body will thank you for it!
