The Mentor of Pain

“Deep emotional pain in our lives can either be debilitating or liberating. We are only freed if we can see beyond the pain allowing it to be a powerful teacher.” - Tad Inoue

Most of the pain in my life came to me as an adult, not as a child. But I know there are those, who through no fault of their own, came to feel great pain early on in their lives. While it is tragic to know that some grew up feeling unloved, unwanted, unworthy of kindness or abandoned by all, I do know that all of these deeply painful feelings come from our life experiences and not from what is really within each of us.

While I would never wish any pain on any person in this world, I also know that through our pain we have the opportunity to rise up and realize more of our own personal power. As a matter of fact, of all the truly great stories of success that I know, most needed the pain of their lives to light the fire of passion that would drive these individuals beyond what most of us are willing to do or put ourselves through just to accomplish what we want.

I think of retired UFC Middleweight champion, Frank Shamrock’s story as a vivid example of success that was built as a result of deep emotional pain. Frank was brutally mistreated by his father as a young child but found his way to Bob Shamrock who would adopt him, love him and inspire him to become one of the greatest UFC Middleweight champions ever.

Frank has inspired so many young fighters in his lifetime to become something greater than when they started, but our world may never have seen Frank’s greatness if his life was not forged through pain. I am thankful that Frank found a way out of his pain and a path to success in his life. But he is not alone when it comes to pain. He is not alone when it comes to a desire to become something greater.

We are all so very worthy of the success that we desire. But more importantly, we are all so worthy of feeling loved and cherished. When we love one another we teach each other our value. Loving another is the best way I know to tell them who they truly are. I am love. I am joy. I am so very good. And so are each one of you.
