Deep Empathy

“No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care” ― Theodore Roosevelt

I have come to know in years of late, that I am highly empathic. I can easily feel and identify with the emotions of others. And for me, this creates a special kind of connection with others that moves me to be sympathetic to their situation and to love them in the deepest way I know how.

Being empathic has served me so well in the relationships my life, but it has also been the cause of criticism. I have been accused of being “too emotional” or overly expressive with my feelings. But I have never viewed my feelings as a disability in these ways, because they have empowered me to connect in the deepest ways with others, even strangers.

There is nothing more satisfying than connecting with another person, feeling their pain, and simply being there to help lessen the blows of experience. My empathic nature gives me insights into others that I know few want to have. But I can understand another person in a way that makes them more real and close to me. And when I do, there is a cathartic release of deep connection that I can only describe as bliss.

Connecting through emotion in this way, is like saying to the other person, “I love you just like I love myself. You are as worthy as I am, so let’s walk together for just a little while until you feel better.” These are the moments of gold in my life. Nothing compares to the kind of offering I can give when I hold the hand of another so they can feel steady once more.

We are all in this life together. And I know that I make my journey worth more, when I offer from within the loving feelings that seem to overflow within me. I don’t think I am unusual in this capacity, but I have definitely leaned into it. And the results in my life have been spectacular. The love and joy I have cultivated because of this is so beyond what I ever expected to have. All I can say is thank you. Thank you to the universe. Thank you to me. Thank you to those who allow me to hold their hand for just a little while.

I am love. I am joy. I am so very good.
