“Self acceptance and group acceptance”

“And you cannot be anything other than you are. Let it sink deep into your heart: you can only be that which you are, never anything else.” - Osho, Unio Mystica, vol. 1 talk #3

Self acceptance is such an important topic these days. My observation is that so many are trying to be something that they aren’t in the hopes to have or feel something they don’t now. Trying to become wealthy for a myriad of reasons. Trying to look a certain way. Trying to put on a particular image of a life on social media that doesn’t really exist in real life.

I think we all are guilty of doing a version of this to some degree or another. The desire for social acceptance runs deep within each of us. It actually has practical application and it is why we evolved to care so much about what others think of us.

As we evolved through the thousands of years as hunter gatherers. We needed this among our small tribes for cohesion and connection. It was important to have a tribe of 25-35 people who held each other in some good esteem. Our very lives depended on it. But we were never meant to need thousands or even millions of people accept us and like us. Wow that would drive a person to really present a series of falsehoods about themselves.

Today I think we see this with influencers and other celebrity types. Who feel they must portray and upkeep an image that is acceptable to so many. I think we as observers, fans and society must recognize that we inadvertently put pressure on those with a lot of visibility and we directly contribute to their unhealthy self image or lack of mental health by the standards that we hold them to.

No matter how we feel about the behaviors of others, unless we are in their tribe (family or stakeholders) then I think we need to be mindful of the pressures we indirectly and directly apply. We need to care about how our personal tribe behaves, and also remember to be more compassionate towards those that are outside our tribes.
