“Emotional Surfing”

“When we allow ourselves to feel our pain and suffering, then we give ourselves the opportunity to experience a deepening of appreciation for who we really are.” - Tadayoshi Inoue

I used to think that pain and suffering should be avoided or minimized in order to have the life of joy and happiness that I wanted. Today I know that it is only through my own pain and suffering that I can touch the deepest places of appreciation and joy in my life.

I know and appreciate what I want in my life, by knowing through my experiences what I do not like. This means I must allow myself to go to those places of pain and suffering from time to time and allow them to inform me. So now when have moments of pain or suffering, I just say thank you for what it is giving me.

Pain and suffering is not pleasant but I know that it is deeply necessary for me to understand not only what I want and like, but to also empower me to honor myself honestly and fully.

What this means for an emotional being like myself is that I have become an expert emotional surfer. I surf the emotional waves of my life catching big waves and small waves, and reaping the rewards of appreciation as I shoot the curl of melancholy, or the tube of ease in my life. No matter what, it is all fun if I can sit back, hang loose and allow everything to be as it should be.

I am love. I am joy. I am a champion emotional surfer!
