“What are you carrying in your life?”

“Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward. If you want to fly, you have to give up what weighs you down.” - Roy T. Bennett

Are you holding on to something that has weighed you down in your life? Does your feelings effect how well you are able to change your behaviors so that you can accomplish your goals? You may be holding on to something emotionally that is stopping you from realizing your body and life goals. We all have emotional attachments that we cling to. Some we can easily recognize while others are much deeper and require bravery and some investigation.

The bad news is the longer we hold on to anything emotionally the heavier it feels within us and the deeper it begins to effects our lives. We end up being controlled and directed by the things we hold to so tightly. Whether it be worrying too much about what others think of us, or our anxiety about our future, we risk not being able to see past these obstacles when we hold too tightly to them. And in the end our attachments become like anchors that hold us in place in our lives disallowing the natural dynamic flow of our personal growth and change.

We hold tightly to our obsessions in life because we think these are the things that actually give us what we feel, and by keeping them close to us we can always have these feelings we desire. Actually, we create the love we feel ourselves, not our lovers. We create the sense of security, our money doesn’t. And we create our own sense of joy and elevation, our accomplishments don’t.

Our lovers, our money and our accomplishments are wonderful, but when we think of them in a way that makes them all-important to us and the only pathway to our desired feelings, then they confine us. And if a day comes that we lose them, we feel broken on the inside. I felt this way after my divorce, but what I have realized is that I held too tightly to my ideas about what my life was suppose to look like and feel like. So when things changed I had to go back to the drawing board on every aspect of my life and reconstruct what I wanted.

The good news is I was well prepared for this and I did the hard internal work for several years. Today, I am in love with myself once again and more importantly I see how all of my life has informed me today in such wonderful ways. I am better equipped to handle my emotional life and my physical life. Most of all, I have complete peace over my past and I am excited about what is coming next!
