Are you brave enough for change?

“Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.” - Fyodor Dostoevsky

Dostoevsky understood human nature especially how fear can keep us from making decisions and choices that will lead us to the outcomes we really want in our lives. Most people believe that it is their situation that keeps them from the results they desire. The most common excuses; I don’t have enough time, or money, or opportunity. We label all these excuses as our “reasons” for not being able to apply ourselves to our goals. We do this so we can feel better about having them. No matter what reasons we give, they all keep us from doing and having what we really want in our lives.

How we look at our choices will determine the outcomes we receive in more precise ways. It’s not our situations that keeps us from doing what we want, it’s our fear of what we think might happen that really does. We do this when we imagine all the negative outcomes that are possible as if they WILL happen instead of them being just one of many possible outcomes we may happen. We can’t know the future, but we can move toward a future that we desire always.

Whether it is investing in ourselves so we can improve, or changing our eating habits so we can have the body we want, or even cutting those bad apples out of our lives out so that we can have a smoother life experience, are all examples of choices we are always faced with but make these choices with true optimism. Most look for the negative outcomes before they make a choice. How can this decision hurt me?

We can look at these decisions in our lives as if they will lead us to having a better life or we can see them colored with issues, problems and possibly leading us to outcomes we do not desire. No matter what, only moving toward what we want will get us to our goals in the shortest time. Trying to accomplish goals by focusing our energy on simply avoiding what we do not want is a long and difficult road that usually ends up in failure.

Are your decisions directed by your fears? Can you make decisions about your future and goals that are directed by what you want and not by what you fear may happen? Bottom line: Do you have the courage to actually change your outcomes in your life?
