Be the Caterpillar

“It’s only after you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.” - Roy T. Bennett

Have you struggled with change? Changing your body, your ideas, your beliefs about you, or anything in your life only to find yourself thinking, acting and believing the same things that got you where you are now… unsatisfied with some portion of  your experience in this life? Your not alone, so many of us feel this way about some part of our life.

The reason why so many get stuck repeating the same patterns in their live is  because they try to change from the outside in. Most people try to change what they believe about themselves like feeling powerful, feeling beautiful or just feeling happy about their lives, by isolating what they think is the root cause on the outside in order to feel better on the inside. They approach this problem by focusing on the change they want on the outside like their body, their money or their situation but always to no avail completely.

The key to success is we must become the caterpillar that transforms in to the butterfly. The caterpillar must go into a hibernation state where it essentially becomes a completely new creature. This is in essence what we do when our motivation for change is to feel something different from our life experience.

True change comes from embracing the uncomfortability of change. We must be ok with feeling new and possibly scary feelings throughout our transformation into that person we know we want to become.

I have so many expanses of this in the last 30 years in my nutritional practice. My favorite example is of Greg. I was weary of working with Greg in the beginning because I could see that he was a very angry person, but he didn’t see this. He had lots of traumas in his life with family and other things. But he deeply desired to feel the joy of his life. He had success in his business and plenty of friends. But he just couldn’t get over his anger and it was stopping him from enjoying his bodybuilding journey and his life.

Shorty after we starting working together we uncovered his emotional block. He literally didn’t realize that joy and happiness was his choice. He didn’t have to lean into anger every time something wasn’t going his way. We worked on this and soon he was preaching to all his friends the about chasing joy and gratitude. After just a few years everyone in is small town seem to know who he was and that he was the center of building others up and living in a state of gratitude. When you live there it is hard to be angry.  I ended up really loving Greg.
