“A life of Gratitude”

“It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.” – Brother Steindl-Rast.

It has always been easy for me to see the direct connection between being being truly grateful and feeling joyful in my life. Now I am talking about being truly grateful which means I need to see the connection between the value I receive from a person or experience, no matter what kind of person or experience I am meeting or having.

I used to only feel grateful for people or experiences that made me feel happy, loved or that gave me something clearly valuable. But I have come to realize that even my bad experiences and the people whom I do not like what they say or do can have great value in my life. And for this I am truly greatful.

That doesn’t mean experience can’t still feel crapy. Or that I agree with the behaviors of some that I meet or see in the world. But I tend to separate my own feelings from the value that I receive.

I can receive great value from a very bad experience or a horrible acting person. Usually it is built in the learning that I get from these experiences. But I can also find value in how these aspects of my life help me to move toward better ones. No matter what I am so thankful for what they all add to me and my life.

Maybe this is why my life feels so wonderful. Yes, I have gone through some horrible times in my life but as I see it today what they produced or stimulated within me and my life is immeasurable and so wonderful. And it is all due to the attitude I choose to take, not the events but my attitude toward them. I haven’t always done this but I choose to today.

So I say thank you for all the wonderful and horrible times I have experienced. I say thank you to all the people good and bad in my life that I have met and experienced. All of these have produced a level of happiness that I could not have imagined.

I am love. I am joy. I am thankful!
