“Being more thoughtful”

"Everyone wants your energy for al little as they can get it for." -Tadayoshi Inoue

All throughout history the most valuable currency has always been human effort, we see it represented as money usually. Your energy that you spend on whatever you spend it on. No matter what time and place, someone wants some or all of it from you.

Make no mistake what is really happening with taxation, the price of goods and services, war, the exploitation of labor and just about any atrocity is someone is in a position to get your energy sometimes as a trade and other times they just take it.

This is the world of people that we live in. We all survive off the energy we need. Whether it be the food we eat or our labor in exchange for something we want or need it is really basically the same thing. Sometimes it is an equitable exchange but many times it isn’t. The question that we always have before us is how do we treat each other fairly so that we all can get what we each need without harming others.

I think it is natural for most who are unaware of themselves and others to want to get this at any cost thinking it is survival. And to them there is never enough to feel safe. No matter how much they have they often never really feel safe or worthy of anything less. And we often elevate this kind of thinking and we say it shows a kind of excellence. And maybe it does but it often ignores the consequences to the rest of society that aggregating such resources has.

What does it take to ship 240 million iPhones in 2021? How much human labor? From start to finish including the acquisition of all the materials needed. It is quite an endeavor to say the least. I love my iPhone but is it really fair? Something tells me no. Ask the Congolese children who dug up some of the minerals in the Congo for $2 a day? Poor, hungry and mistreated.

I am not trying to make anyone feel bad about their Apple iPhone purchase but I am trying to encourage companies and people to think deeply about the real impact we really have on each other. If we are going to say we are good people shouldn’t we at least try and act like good people?
