“The ethic of Grit”

“People with grit don’t believe that failure is a permanent condition.” -Angela Duckworth

I heard a TED Talk from Angela Duckworth on “The power of passion and perseverance.” She is an academic and psychologist who has done research on perseverance and what characteristics are neccisary to reach long term goals.

Duckworth defines “Grit” as passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Not talent or luck this is the ability to stick to something through the long haul. She is really on to something in her work. Without perseverance and true dedication to a set of tasks or goal it is almost impossible to achieve in life in any consistent manner.

I have found that in my over 30 years as a diet coach and nutritionist working with so many athletes and clients on weight and competition I have gotten to see 2 distinct sides of humanity. One side who is very driven and motivated and the other side which struggles to just continue with simple lifestyle components. Why?

What I can see is that most who struggle really don’t have much “grit” as Duckworth explains. They see mostly pain and difficulty and not the passion and willingness to change. They want to but not if it is uncomfortable. Which are you? Are you willing to be uncomfortable for long period of your life in order to achieve something truly worthwhile for you? Most aren’t I have found.

No matter which you seem to be or have been. Anyone can build and develop a quality of Grit in their lives but what it takes is a deep dive into the bigger reason why they want something. This is a deeper examination of exactly why someone wants a particular goal. This is also the reason that completely excites the person. If it doesn’t then the reason we want something isn’t big enough to overcome the pain and uncomfortability it may take to accomplish what we desire.

I am love. I am joy. I am good.
