Understanding Meaning and Purpose

“As humans, we are meaning creating creatures. I am sure that the meaning of my life has something to do with who I am, and how I actualize this in my experience.” - Tadayoshi Inoue

Does life have meaning? Well for most of us it can have deep meaning. But each of us must create this meaning ourselves. How does this work?

The meaning of our lives is exactly what we decide it to be. We create all of the importance, all of the truths and all of our preferences in our life. Knowing this can usually take some of the pressure off us, but how do we know what this higher meaning really is? Well meaning tends to find us, it isn’t found by thinking hard or ruminating on it like many believe.

Meaning and purpose seems to come to us in 3 distinct ways. We can observe others operating from a higher sense of purpose and we can emulate this in our own way. We can have an experience that galvanizes us to deeply desire something and that is the second way of finding purpose. Or we can also fall in love with some concept, person, action or labor that drives us for greater expansion in this area. All of these ways of finding purpose in our lives are equally as powerful.

Just remember that the meaning of your life and the purpose of your life are two very different concepts. Meaning speaks to what our actions and intentions really mean or represent to us, but our purpose will guide and direct us so that we can always navigate towards those wonderful destinations we always desire.

For me, my life’s purpose is to live a joyful and loving experience. After all, I am love. I am joy. While the meaning of my life is no more complex than I am so very good.
