Daddies and Daughters

“A son is a son ’til he gets a wife, but a daughter is a daughter all her life.” - Emily Giffin

It isn’t Fathers Day yet, but to me everyday feels like a day that is special because I get to be a daddy. Truly the day I became a father something deep within me changed. As if destiny took ahold of me and allowed me to see something I never expected to see. Something that felt so wonderful and precious that I would never ever want to turn my light of love away from it again. That something was my daughter Kiana.

Kiana knows how special and loved she is by her daddy. But my words and actions never seem strong enough. As she has walked through her childhood into adolescence, and now as she marches toward womanhood I cry tears of joy because I still get to hold her little hand until she no longer needs me to steady herself. How blessed am I. How grateful am I to get to walk a part of this life with my perfect daughter.

Thank you my sweet little girl for choosing me as your father. Someday you will be a woman and you may then find a person that will hold your hand just as I have, and begin to walk with you on your path. I have only one wish for you then.

I want you to love as deeply as you can. I want you to explore your joy as often as possible. And I want you to listen to your heart and never the criticisms of others. They only know themselves, they have not heard your beautiful song like I have. That voice inside of you, is a magnificent one. And you deserve to sing your song as loud as you can, the true song of your life.

And no matter what happens to you, no matter who stays in your life and who goes. I will never abandon you. You are a part of me. I will be with you in life. I will be with you in death. Our energies are mingled forever. And if when those days come and I am no longer here physically. I want you to hear my voice tell you this each morning when you wake, as I have thousands of times already. “Kiana, I love you. I was born to love you, and you were born so that I would.”

I am love. I am joy. I am good. And I am my daughter’s daddy.
