I couldn’t help it, I’m thinking again! I’m heading home and as I sit with a mask on watching so many comply and conform to standards we did not agree to, I ask myself the question “is it right to enforce compassion or kindness?”Wearing a mask and practicing social distancing is at its core a practice of compassion towards others. But should we each be compelled to comply if we decide it is not something we each wish to do? Does it violate our constitutional rights?
It is important to remember that if you believe in our constitution of the United States, then nobody, not even our government can enforce or make any laws that deprive any of us the right to life, liberty, or property without due process of law. This is written into our constitution by our founding fathers. This means in order for each of us to wear a mask or comply with any state or county order, it must be of our own accord unless due process has occurred and new laws have been put in place. Otherwise, these orders violate each of our US constitutional rights. Let that sink in for just a second.
In other words, our compliance towards wearing masks and social distance orders as citizens of this United States of America must be voluntary right now. If it is not, then by definition, and the fear of our founding fathers, we once again live under the boot of a tyrannical government, which is exactly what our constitution was designed to protect us against. As a matter of fact, Thomas Jefferson said: “If a law is unjust, a man not only has the right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so.”
Everyone who truly knows me, knows that I am a very loving and compassionate person. I wish no harm to anyone. I want joy and loving interactions with every single person I encounter. But I also prize personal liberty which I am confident is the ONLY way for anyone to actualize the pursuit of happiness to which we wish and are all also entitled to in our great country. So while I disagree with the way in which our country is approaching these orders for wearing masks and social distancing, I practice these orders because I feel it may help others feel safer even if I do not believe that these measures are constitutionally sound in the manner to which they are being enforced or talked about. I am concerned that we are over looking some basic tenants of what this country was founded. Furthermore, I am additionally concerned that we as a people are being manipulated to serve some greater agenda that may or may not serve us. Even though some of these practices may produce some good, the ends can never justify the means in any case! There must be other solutions that can satisfy our need to be compassionate towards others and not deprive any citizen of their constitutional rights. The warning here is that if we look at history, then we know this is a very slippery slope towards shades of dictatorship or worse subjugation.
It is my belief that in order to have a truly just society, all its citizens must critically analyze itself and it’s laws so that in times like these we do our best not to harm anyone in order to serve a few. We must think bigger and even more compassionately. We must have compassion for those less fortunate as well as those with advantage. Every single person must be served equally under the law and by our government.
Tell me what do you think?
