Have you ever found yourself in a standoff with a heaping plate of pasta, a mountain of mashed potatoes, or a tower of pancakes? We’ve all been there, and it’s like a food fight where the opponent is our willpower. But fear not, because in my 30 years as a diet coach, I’ve cracked the code to conquering this culinary chaos: portion control.

Picture this: I once had a client, let’s call him Joe, who thought “family-size” meant “for one.” Joe’s challenge was portion control, and it was causing him to stack on extra pounds faster than a squirrel hoarding acorns. So, we embarked on a journey to shrink his servings, not his satisfaction.

Our strategy was simple but effective. We switched his plates to smaller ones (a psychological trick that works wonders), and I taught him the art of mindful eating. Joe learned to savor each bite, listen to his body’s hunger cues, and stop when satisfied, not when stuffed.
